Joint Use in Massachusetts: Keeping Kids and Communities Active and Healthy

May 2, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Presented by the Community Health Training Institute

Description: Obesity rates among adults and youth have skyrocketed over the past 30 years. Recently, the tide has started to turn, but there’s still a long way to go to get our communities as healthy and active as they need to be in order to keep obesity rates falling and fight obesity-related illness and disease. Exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy metabolism and weight.

This training will present information on how and why communities in Massachusetts should share space in schools and other municipal facilities with the wider community to increase opportunities for recreation and exercise. Joint use agreements, or simple contracts that describe the responsibilities and expectations that come with sharing facilities, will be introduced as the primary tool for enabling publicly owned buildings and grounds to safely open their doors and gates after-hours.

Audience: Coalition leaders and members, teams, and partners working towards community health

Participants completing this training will be able to:

  1. Identify buildings and grounds in their cities and towns that can be shared with the wider community
  2. Assemble a joint use team and create a timeline for implementation of a joint use initiative
  3. Answer questions about the potential risks and requirements of sharing space
  4. Draft a comprehensive joint use agreement
