Presented by the Community Health Training Institute

Audience: Local and state health department staff, community coalitions, hospital staff, or anyone else involved in a CHA or CHIP; public health professionals; community organizers; municipal department staff; healthcare professionals.

Topics: Strategic planning, Community Health Assessments

Description: How do you balance the requirement of completing community health assessments and community health improvement plans with the competing demands for peoples‚Äô time and community resources? The answer might be rapid planning, a process that is focused, intensive, interactive, participatory, and can produce results in far less time than a traditional strategic or community health improvement planning process. We will present a comparative look at rapid planning versus conventional planning processes for CHA/CHIPs, including: the importance of a participatory approach; implications of rapid planning on the assessment process; steps and guidelines for successful rapid planning; and the benefits and pitfalls of selecting a rapid planning approach. Several case studies of planning processes with multi-sectoral partners and diverse community participation facilitated by a public health institute will be presented to illustrate key learnings.

Participants completing this training will be able to:

  1. Determine which planning process to adopt for a community effort.
  2. Structure the approach to engage diverse participants from traditional and non-traditional public health sectors.
  3. Understand how public health institutes can be involved in facilitating this effort.
