Board Basics: A Toolkit of Best Practices for Nonprofit Boards will explore the components of a strong board including planning, governance, operations, corporate responsibility, fundraising, and more. Participants will be asked to complete a board assessment prior to the session which will set the stage for discussion, problem solving and strategies for addressing board “pain-points.”
Participants will explore:
Why a strategic plan is critical to board effectiveness
An overview of board roles and responsibilities
How to recruit and retain volunteer leadership (create a board map and position description)
Sharpening committee effectiveness
Components of an effective board meeting
A fundraising plan that will engage all board members
Decision-makers at a nonprofit organizations including executive directors, high-level program directors, volunteer board members, and board presidents.
About the Trainer
Vicki Burkhart works with nonprofit organizations who have visionary leaders, well-articulated missions and committed volunteers to take these organizations to the next level — including expansion to a national platform. Her nonprofit background spans 35-years and she is recognized for her experience in merging and scaling nonprofit, volunteer organizations. In addition, Vicki has served nonprofits as an executive director for over 30 years, most recently as the executive director of Kids’ Chance of America.
Vicki is the founder of The Burkhart Group, a nonprofit consulting and growth strategy firm, which has provided seasoned professional service to nonprofit organizations for the last 20 years. The firm and its cultivated network of nonprofit professionals continues to grow nonprofits nationally and internationally. Most recently, Vicki launched The More Than Giving Company and serves as the lead executive for the Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs in the mid-Atlantic region.
