Leading with Racial Equity -Transformational Governance:
How to Strengthen Your Board with Action Steps

A cutting-edge training series with Judy Freiwirth, Psy.D. Principal, Nonprofit Solutions Associates; and Coleen Walker, Board Co-Chair, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation

As the protests against police brutality sweep the country, many nonprofits have sent out statements about their support of and the need for racial equity to their stakeholders. Moving beyond the statements, Boards are now preparing to look within their walls for change. In what ways can your board address racial equity issues? How can your board use a racial equity lens when recruiting for new board members? What are effective strategies to build a genuinely inclusive board team and culture, improving your board’s ability to carry out the organization’s strategic directions? Using innovative and cutting-edge practices, how can your board best strengthen its policies, practices, and board culture using a racial equity lens???

In this highly experiential, virtual training series, board teams will gain the following:?

  • Strategies to begin conversations about racial equity within your board
  • Concrete approaches to improve governance practices using a racial equity lens?
  • Action steps for building a board culture which supports an inclusive and racially diverse board?
  • Practical tools to help your board increase its accountability and engagement with the diverse communities it serves

This “state of the art,” three-session series, is designed explicitly for CDC boards and other community development/affordable housing organizations. The training series will be offered to three to five organizations, including 3-5 board members with their executive directors (each ED and Board Member should be registered separately). An online board assessment will be conducted before the training series to help customize the training series to the participating organizations’ specific needs. The confidential board assessment results will be provided to the respective participating boards as a tool for continued board practice improvement beyond the training series. The sessions will be held once a month on three Saturdays to allow for time between sessions to implement learned practices:?Sept 26, Oct 31, and Nov 21 from 9 AM-12:30 PM. Space is limited, and registration is open until Friday, Aug 28, 2020.
