From Welcoming to Belonging: Implicit Bias for Organizations

May 15, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Instructors:
Malia Lazu, The Urban Labs
Diversity and inclusion have long been a focus for the Institute and The Urban Labs hopes to help the Institute deep their program and impact. The Urban Labs is combining the Discover Bias and Bias to Belonging training to allow attendees to identify bias and learn how to apply the belonging framework. The Urban Labs has a goal of helping board members, selected managers, and other staff explore how belonging framework can help deepen their diversity and inclusion efforts and goals. The training will start with Discover Bias and lead into Bias to Belonging:

Discover Bias Training: The deeper people understand bias the more confidence they will have while participating in any diversity and inclusion efforts. Discover Bias is focused on creating a shared understanding of bias and how to think about diversity strategy.

Outcomes:

Create shared language around bias
Attendees will be able to identify bias and articulate solutions
Experience calling in rather than calling out when bias arrives
Help participants identify the ROI for diversity and inclusion
Bias to Belonging Training: The belonging framework introduces the idea of the quality of the relationship with others and offers a holistic approach to achieving diversity and inclusion goals. From Bias to Belonging is a 2-4 hour training focused on exploring how to shift a culture to expand the idea of who is included.

Outcomes:

Understand the nuance of belonging
Attendees will be able to identify ways the company culture can be more open.
Help participants identify how to expand networks in an authentic way
Feel more confident when meeting new people
Testimony: “In today‚Äôs charged political and social environment, conversations about bias can get touchy pretty fast. Malia Lazu has an extraordinary capacity to bring humor, playfulness and a whole lot of heart into every room. Which means the rest of us get to drop our guard, lighten up and really learn together. My organization is stronger, smarter and kinder because of the time we spent with her.‚Äù ‚Äî Deborah Frieze, President, Boston Impact Initiative
