Rural Walking Toolkit: How to help rural areas develop walking facilities

September 23, 2013 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Who Should Attend:
MiM communities in rural areas
Rural communities interested in developing walking facilities
Planners of rural communities
Those interested in rural walking and the built environment

MDPH commissioned WalkBoston to develop recommendations to help rural and low-density communities increase walking opportunities.

This training will provide an introduction to different types of walking facilities that can be constructed in rural areas. The training will include case studies of a number of communities building creative and cost-effective walking facilities. These communities have faced many challenges in the process of planning and constructing their walking facilities. Although each community is unique, these case study examples may help other communities identify opportunities to provide better walking infrastructure and the tools to implement such improvements.

Learning Objectives:
Participants completing this training will be able to:

1) Inspect case studies in Rural Walking Toolkit
2) Examine possibilities for local application of examples
3) Develop walking options within local settings
4) Identify locations for walking improvements
5) Analyze benefits and costs of construction
6) Discuss the program in public meetings
7) Formulate best practices for continuing the work over time
