Coalition & Community Conflict Management

Topics: Setting boundaries around unhealthy conflict, navigating, and managing healthy conflict, introduction to de-escalation strategies.

Description: Conflict is natural and inevitable in community and justice work. This training aims to help participants identify and practice the best strategies to assert boundaries and communicate effectively when dealing with conflict. Part of managing friction or heightened events can also include de-escalation, which reduces the size or scope of an issue. Participants will be introduced to the basics of  de-escalation strategies, such as verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, offering a variety of options to solve problems, and communicate. Trainers will offer a variety of hands-on activities, including large- and small-group discussions, role-playing, and group brainstorming.

Audience: Coalition leaders and partners, community groups, individuals working towards community health.

Trainers: Gracie Rolfe and Jasper Lee, Health Resources in Action

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe de-escalation techniques
  2. Review strategies for dealing with challenging situations
  3. Practice dealing with challenging situations
  4. Name 1-2 strategies of the Asking, Listening, Informing technique

MA DPH Coalition Criteria Addressed:

  1. Participation from key stakeholders (individuals and organizations that have a vested stake or interest in a program or policy initiative, e.g., it will impact them directly).
  2. Membership that is reflective of the community.
  3. Consistency with MDPH’s goals and priorities.
