Leading with Racial Equity -Transformational Governance:
How to Strengthen Your Board with Action Steps

A cutting-edge training series with Judy Freiwirth, Psy.D. Principal, Nonprofit Solutions Associates; and Coleen Walker, Board Co-Chair, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation

This “state of the art” governance training will provide Board teams with the following from the training series:

Strategies to begin or continue to have courageous conversations about racial equity within your board
Concrete approaches to improve governance practices using a racial equity lens?
Action steps for building a board culture which supports an inclusive and racially diverse board?
Practical tools to help your board increase its accountability and engagement with the diverse communities it serves
This highly interactive 3-session virtual training series will use the Zoom platform and will be offered to five organizations who will work together as board teams, along with their Executive Directors. Each team should consist of at least one board officer, preferably the board chair and at least two other board members, up to five board members.

Participating organizations will also be asked to complete an online confidential racial equity and governance board assessment prior to the first session, as the training will be customized to the needs of the groups.

The training series will take once a month for three Saturdays- 9 AM-12:30 PM.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Each board team will consist of at least one board officer, preferably the board chair or incoming board chair, and at least two other board members up to five members who commit to participate in all three training sessions.
  • All team members will commit to participating in all three training sessions.
  • The Executive Director will commit to participate in all three sessions with their board teams, so that organizational teams can be up to six people.
  • If possible, participants will reflect the diversity of the community we serve and the diversity of the Board, with a mix of new and longer-term board members.
  • Each of our team members will commit to using their video function on Zoom, rather than the audio function only and be fully present for the training. This will assist in the building the group dynamic as 97% of all communication is non-verbal.
  • Each organization commits to ensuring that their full board completes the online, confidential racial equity board assessment no later than Friday, Sept. 11th.

Applications are due no later than Friday, October 14, 2020. Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis, so organizations are encouraged to submit their application as soon as possible.

About the Trainers: Judy Freiwirth, Psy.D. Principal, Nonprofit Solutions Associates

Judy Freiwirth is nationally known as a leading consultant, trainer, speaker and thought leader in the field of governance and board development. She has been training and consulting to community-based and social change organizations for over 30 years. She has worked with many CDC’s, community development, affordable housing, and tenant rights organizations in Massachusetts as well as nationally. She also has a long history of community, grassroots, progressive organizing and brings a hands-on perspective to her work with nonprofits. She is the Founder and Chair of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management’s national network of consultants, researchers, management support organizations, and other capacity builders focused on developing new models of governance and research-based practice. She has also published numerous articles and publications on governance including The Nonprofit Quarterly and is a contributing author for two nonprofit books, Nonprofit Governance: Innovative Perspectives and Approaches and You and Your Board: New Practices for Challenging Times from Researchers, Provocateurs, and Practitioners. She serves on the Editorial board of the Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership.

Coleen Walker, Board Co-Chair, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation

Coleen Walker is a visionary entrepreneur that drives positive leadership through her commitment to serve individuals, teams, and organizations. She is the Co-Chair of the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation Board of Directors, an organization with the mission to promote economic stability for low and moderate-income residents of all ages.? With over 20 years of professional experience, her expertise focuses on learning and development, organizational change, and recruiting and hiring. For the last 14 years, she has owned CKW Management Inc, a company specializing in management consulting for small businesses and events. She has a master’s degree in leadership and organizational change from Regis College. She has a certificate in nonprofit consulting and a Certified Professional of Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM-CP).
