Senior Housing: Ensuring Health and Stability for an Aging Population through Development

July 14, 2016 @ 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Presented by the Mel King Institute.

Instructors:

Lizbeth Heyer, Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly and Andrew DeFranza, Harborlight Community Partners

Senior homelessness is expected to increase by almost 30% by 2020 due to lack of access to stable housing. To respond to this crisis, community developers need to produce significantly more affordable senior housing units. Yet service enriched senior housing projects can be quite cost prohibitive to most developers given the lack of funding and technical know-how. In this three hour workshop, we will review and discuss best practices, opportunities and strategies to meet the need for senior housing in our communities.  Topics will include:

  • How senior housing fits into an overall community development strategy
  • An overview of best practices for developing and maintaining senior housing projects
  • Case studies of two successful senior housing projects
  • A strategic discussion on how to work with the healthcare sector to support and sustain housing and services for seniors
