WHAT IS POSITIVE DEVIANCE?
The Positive Deviance (PD) approach is an “inside out” strategy for behavior and social change that seeks existing local solutions instead of external best practices. In every community that faces a difficult problem, there are a few people or groups, called positive deviants, whose behaviors and practices enable them to find better solutions than peers, without using any additional resources. The approach enables a community or organization to discover these existing successful behaviors or strategies, develop activities for amplification, and measure the outcomes.
The PD approach has been used in 41 countries to address a range of complex public health issues. In the US, the PD approach has been used to reduce hospital acquired infections like MRSA, address social isolation among older adults, increase school performance among young males of color, and improve the quality of life of people with severe mental illness.
